How to use your Health Magnets

Health magnets for wellness comes in all shapes and sizes. For magnet therapy to work you must use it correctly.

The first thing you'll want to know is:

Is it Safe?

They are considered harmless by the FDA and are generally considered safe to use at all times.

Magnets are safe, but they are strong. My colleague writes about a story of a friend name Dirk who got into a pickle with some magnets. You can view pictures of his injury by clicking on the link. Be warned: These photos are a little gory.

Static magnets are what magnetic companies use to build their products around. They provide a consistent magnetic field (MF). The strength is also very predictable. The MF comes from the magnet or lodestone itself. The MF in a permanent magnet runs from north to south pole.

Magnetic fields are measured in units of gauss. Gauss strength determines how therapeutic your magnet will be. A refrigerator magnet has about 10 gauss and is very ineffective at working on a therapeutic level.

Electromagnetism works when an electric current travelling through a wire generates a magnetic field. In electromagnets the magnetic field is formed around the wire. If you wrap that magnetic wire around an object you magnetize it. There are many concerns about electromagnetic radiation but studies suggest that they are not harmful.

Use the health magnets as you need it but to use it correctly you need to know how north and south pole magnets affect the body. Depending on your condition, applying a south pole magnet could worsen your condition.

If you have a wrap or magnetic adhesive you can wear it as long as you need it. I have not known anyone harmed by wearing their magnetic products for more than 24 hours.

Place the magnet at the location of where it hurts. If you have back pain do not purchase a magnetic bracelet, it will not work! I will explain more in the coming articles.

§  Do Not place your magnetic product near your cell phone, credit cards, computers and anything that could normally be affected by normal magnets.

§  It has been suggested that pregnant women not used health magnets as there are no studies that shows how it will effect the unborn child. However, I know of a few pregnant women who slept on a magnetic mattress pad throughout their pregnancy. I believe it's a personal choice call on this one.

§  If you find yourself sore, a rash occurs or an increase in pain after applying the magnet (rare occasion) you should discontinue use.

But I will tell you a personal story of a very dear friend of mine. He was in extreme pain and is allergic to pain medication. His brother in law, who happens to be a neurosurgeon, recommended magnetic therapy to just "try it out." He was skeptical but started using it anyways because he had nothing to lose. He experienced pain the first few weeks and almost threw the magnets out. His brother in law encouraged him to continue to use it. He did and eventually he recovered. This is his personal story. §  Do not use health magnets in areas in which you do not want to increase in blood flow.

§  If you wear a drug patch, placing a health magnet in the area could allow the drug to enter the bloodstream faster than you would like. Avoid doing it.

§  For faster healing, place the health magnets on corresponding acupuncture points.
